In 1993, seventeen year old Johnny Horton was convicted of walking into a McDonalds and shooting a man in the head, as he was supersizing his combo. The city of Rockford, Illinois, was a town in the throws of one of the worst crack epidemics in American history. The police had already lost control of the city, and an event like this, the second of its kind within an 18 month span, was only going to take things from bad to worse. Thankfully, for them, it was an open and shut case, as Johnny walked into the station, himself, copped to the crime, and signed a full confession. Johnny was convicted and sentenced to natural life, in prison. There was only one problem… Johnny Horton was never even in that McDonalds, on that tragic evening.
Johnny Horton was an innocent boy, who walked into the police station by himself, with no representation, to answer some questions that the police had regarding the shooting. For over ten hours, Johnny was locked in an interrogation room, brutalized by two detectives, and forced at gunpoint to sign a full confession, for the McDonalds murder. For two and a half decades, Johnny’s loved ones have fought to free and exonerate him. In spite of another man confessing to the McDonalds murder, and substantial evidence proving Johnny’s innocence, Johnny is still sitting in a cage, waiting for justice, as his case has finally made it to the Appellate Court. Now, as Johnny’s life is once again in the hands of the people sworn to serve and protect him, He and his loved ones pray that eyes will finally be opened, and justice will finally be served.
